Ahmedabad Plane Crash Kills 247: India mourns one of its Worst Aviation Disasters

In one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s modern history, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft plunged into a densely populated area, killing all 242 people onboard and five more on the ground, taking the confirmed death toll to 247.
The flight departed at approximately 1:38 PM IST. Within minutes, the aircraft issued a “Mayday” distress signal, losing altitude rapidly before crashing into the Meghani Nagar locality. The jet collided with the residential quarters of B.J. Medical College, destroying a section of the doctors’ hostel.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a massive explosion, followed by thick plumes of smoke and scattered wreckage. A resident near the hostel told, “It felt like an earthquake. Then we saw the sky turn black and heard screams coming from the hostel.”
No Survivors, Victims Identified
Emergency response teams, including firefighters, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units, and local ambulances, arrived within minutes. However, none of the 230 passengers or 12 crew members survived, as confirmed by regional police chief G.S. Malik, who said: “We have not recovered a single survivor from the wreckage. This is a complete loss.”
The aircraft carried:
- 169 Indian nationals
- 53 British citizens
- 7 Portuguese travellers
- 1 Canadian

Among the passengers was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose name was listed in the official manifest. His family later confirmed his travel plans publicly.
On the ground, five people were killed, including three medical interns and two hostel staff. Over 40 others have been injured, with several in critical condition due to burns and structural collapse from the impact.
Government & Global Response on Ahmedabad Plane Crash
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted the following message on X (formerly Twitter):
“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also shared condolences: “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating. I am being kept updated as the situation develops.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed assistance and consular support for affected families.
Investigations Underway
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in coordination with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), has launched a full-scale inquiry. Both Boeing and GE Aerospace, the aircraft and engine manufacturers respectively, have pledged cooperation.
Officials have recovered the flight data recorder (black box) and cockpit voice recorder from the wreckage, and early assessments point to either a mechanical failure or a critical systems malfunction, though nothing has been officially confirmed.
Flight AI171 had last undergone scheduled maintenance in April 2025. The aircraft was delivered to Air India in 2017 and had a clean safety record.

A Nation in Grief
The tragedy has triggered widespread grief across the nation. Celebrities, political leaders, and citizens have flooded social media with tributes.
Actor Vicky Kaushal posted: “Unreal. Horrifying. Devastated beyond words.”
Fellow actor R Madhavan and actress Janhvi Kapoor also expressed their sympathies, urging people to donate blood and assist those injured.

This incident has renewed scrutiny on India’s aviation infrastructure, airline safety protocols, and rapid response systems. While the Boeing 787 has had a reliable global track record, this is the first fatal crash involving the aircraft since its introduction in 2011.
As rescue teams clear debris and families await news of their loved ones, the spirit of Ahmedabad has shone through in the face of devastation. Locals rushed with blankets, water, and their bare hands to help rescue students trapped under rubble before official crews arrived.
A state-wide memorial service is expected to be held in the coming days, with flags flown at half-mast across Gujarat. India will grieve. But it will also investigate, rebuild, and honour the memories of those lost.
