FORGET PEANUTS AND EGGS; YOU CAN GET FOOD ALLERGIES FROM SEEMINGLY HARMLESS SOURCES

FORGET PEANUTS AND EGGS; YOU CAN GET FOOD ALLERGIES FROM SEEMINGLY HARMLESS SOURCES
Himanshu Yadav

It’s common knowledge that eggs, nuts, dairy, and shellfish can be a source of allergies; but how would you feel if you had to keep off something much more harmless – like honey?

Well, for some Australians like Jaclyn Jauhiainen, a 22-year-old student from Gosford, being constantly alert to the dangers of food allergies comes with the territory. In fact, one of her living nightmares is the possibility of accidentally ingesting honey, as it causes a severe reaction in her body. So rare is her allergy, which when she first saw an allergy specialist, he admitted that he’d never heard about it before.

In Australia, a country with one of the highest prevalence rates of food allergies, one in ten babies suffers from food allergies. The rate in adults is lower, at two percent, since many children tend to outgrow their allergies. Globally, there’s been a steady rise in reported cases of allergies over the last decade, although data on this is scarce especially in non-Western countries.

Dr. Preeti Joshi, an allergy specialist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, believes you can be allergic to just about every kind of food. She’s come across all sorts of rare food allergies including products like garlic, honey, corn, avocado, watermelon and even blueberry.

There’s no cure, so the only way to manage allergies is to stay away from the causative ingredients at all cost. If you have a rare food allergy, you shouldn’t make it less serious as it can affect your life is a serious way.
