Australia’s Fastest-Growing Community? Indians Lead the Way

The Indian diaspora has become the fastest-growing migrant community in Australia, with the Indian-born population reaching over 1 million as of 2024. This significant demographic shift is attributed to factors such as skilled migration, educational opportunities, and robust bilateral relations between Australia and India.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), individuals born in India now constitute the second-largest overseas-born group in Australia, following those born in England. The ABS report that the Indian-born population has seen the largest increase since 2014, reflecting a consistent upward trend in migration from India.

Katrina Knapp, Vice-Consul at the Australian Consulate General in Chennai, highlighted this growth during a recent event, stating that with a population of one million, Indians are the fastest-growing community in Australia.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) underscores the significance of the Indian diaspora, noting that Indian migrants have become the second-largest group of overseas-born residents in Australia. The DFAT report emphasise the active participation of Indian communities across various sectors, including business, politics, academia, and the arts.

Educational pursuits have been a major driver of this demographic trend. Indian students represent a substantial portion of international enrollments in Australian universities and vocational institutions. The Australian Government’s initiatives, such as the Maitri Scholarships, aim to strengthen educational ties by offering fellowships and research grants to Indian students, further enhancing bilateral relations.

The Indian community’s contributions extend beyond numbers. Indian Australians are actively involved in various aspects of Australian society, enriching the multicultural fabric of the nation.
