Calm in a Can

Calm in a Can

| On 13, Feb 2014

When we feel tired and exhausted, we get a boost of energy from a drink with high caffeine content but how about a shot of tranquillity from a drink rich in chamomile, which is known for its calming effects. In US, many such relaxation drinks are available in the supermarkets. The popular ones include the ‘Slow Cow’ (opposite of Red Bull) and the ‘Dream Water’. These drinks are doing a business of more than $30 million every year, which is still pretty less when compared to $6 billion generated by energy drinks but is still quite impressive.

Relaxation drinks are also emerging in the Australian market with products like ‘Koala Karma’, ‘bChill’ and ‘Everyday Sunday’. Another drink called ‘Good Night’ is also becoming popular. It claims to promote better sleep and reduces flight jitters. All these beverages have a set of common ingredients – passionflower, lemon balm, valerian, hops and chamomile, which is the key ingredient with excellent stress reducing properties. Some of the drinks also contain tryptophan, an amino acid which helps in the formation of serotonin, the feel good hormone.

You must be wondering whether these drinks really work. Well, there’s no certainty as such but it is medically proven that herbs like passionflower and valerian can help you with better sleep as they reduce the level of anxiety in your body. Experts are not really convinced with the efficiency of these drinks but they agree that these drinks are safer and healthier than most of the energy drinks available in the market.
