India’s Medal Tally Rises at Paris Paralympics as Nitesh Kumar Clinches Gold
In a historic moment for Indian para-sports, Nitesh Kumar secured a thrilling victory in the men’s singles SL3 class at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell with scores of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21. This hard-fought match marked Nitesh’s first Olympic medal and added the ninth medal to India’s tally at the Games.
Earlier in the day, Yogesh Kathuniya set the tone by winning a silver medal in the discus throw, contributing to India’s strong presence at the Paralympics. Nitesh’s win is particularly significant as it represents the second gold for India in these Games, following Avani Lekhara’s triumph in the Women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event.
Nitesh, a 29-year-old IIT Mandi graduate, has been an inspiring figure in Indian para-badminton. Overcoming a severe leg injury from a 2009 accident, he has consistently shown resilience and determination. His victory in Paris is not only a personal achievement but also a significant milestone for India in the SL3 category, continuing the legacy of Pramod Bhagat, who won gold in Tokyo 2020 when para-badminton made its debut.
As India’s medal count continues to grow, the nation’s athletes are making history and inspiring future generations. With more events still to come, including potential medals from Sukant Kadam and Manisha Ramadass, the Paris 2024 Paralympics could become India’s most successful Paralympic Games to date.
