In a heartfelt tribute to the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, a commemorative stamp was unveiled at the Australian Parliament by actor Rani Mukerji on August 13, 2024. The event was a significant prelude to the 15th annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), celebrating the late director’s iconic contributions to Indian cinema. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries, Members of Parliament, and ministers, was a poignant moment in cherishing the global impact of Hindi cinema.

Late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, renowned for his timeless films and pioneering work in Bollywood, was the first patron of IFFM. His influence extended beyond India, spreading Hindi films across the globe. The launch of this special stamp not only honours his legacy but also marks a milestone in the cultural ties between India and Australia.

Rani Mukerji, representing the Chopra family, expressed her gratitude and pride at the event. “I’m truly honoured and humbled to be a part of this momentous occasion,” she said. “This is not only a celebration of Yash Chopra and YRF’s rich and impactful 50-year-old legacy of shaping pop culture the world over but also of the Indian film industry that has entertained countless people through the power of cinema.”

Mukerji highlighted the significance of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in fostering cultural connections between India and Australia. “The IFFM has been a catalyst for bringing India and Australia closer to each other by championing cultural and creative ties for 15 years now. I’m proud to see the festival grow from strength to strength year on year and act as a bridge connecting the best creative minds of India and Australia,” she added.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange echoed Mukerji’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of the occasion. “This is a landmark year for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne as we celebrate our 15th year. Having Rani Mukerji unveil late Yash ji’s stamp is an iconic moment for us,” she said. Lange also reflected on Chopra’s role as the festival’s first patron and a key supporter, noting that the stamp launch is a tribute to his enduring legacy in Indian cinema.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, running from August 15 to August 25, 2024, will continue to celebrate Indian films, showcasing the diversity and richness of the country’s cinematic heritage. The festival, now in its 15th year, stands as a testament to the strong cultural ties between India and Australia, with Yash Chopra’s influence resonating through every event and screening.
