A new rule has been made mandatory for Victorians, and that is wearing a mask. Yes, you need to cover your face if you step out of the house. Here’s everything you need to know about the new rule:
DO KIDS NEED TO WEAR A MASK?
If your kid is twelve or older, then he or she has to wear a mask before stepping out of the house. For kids between two to twelve, masks are not compulsory but should be considered for safety. As for toddlers, they don’t need to cover their faces with a mask as it is difficult for them.
WHEN DOES IT COME IN EFFECT
The mandate has been delayed by the government to give people time to buy a mask. If you don’t already have a mask, then grab one before 11.59 pm on Wednesday, July 22 because that is when the rule will become compulsory.
WILL I FACE CONSEQUENCES IF I DON’T WEAR A MASK?
You will have to pay a fine of $200 if you don’t wear a mask outdoors. In case you have a particular medical condition, then you may be exempted from wearing a mask. It is advisable to carry a mask while running, even if you don’t put it on. Students who are attending VCE, VCAL, or for onsite supervision have to put on a mask in school. Teachers don’t need to wear a mask when teaching, but they must wear it at all other times.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A MEDICAL-GRADE MASK?
You don’t necessarily need a medical-grade mask, but it should cover the mouth and nose. If you wear a homemade mask, then make sure it is fitting correctly or try a face shield. You can find disposable masks at the chemists or buy them online.
IS WEARING A MASK AT WORK IMPORTANT?
Maintaining social distance and wearing a mask is essential when you are around people. There will be occasional checks by the Victoria Police and WorkSafe inspectors at workplaces. An employer will face a fine of $9913 if they don’t encourage employees to wear a mask.
IS WEARING A MASK ON COMMUTE IMPORTANT?
Enforcement crews will check if people are wearing masks on public transport. If you are driving alone in your car, then you don’t need to wear it but keep it handy. If there are other people with you, then wear a mask.
WHY IS A MASK NECESSARY?
Masks don’t completely stop the transmission of Coronavirus, but it reduces the chances by 80%, and you must sanitise your belongings for safety as well. Wash your hands regularly, and don’t touch your face.
